Our exclusive restaurant Callampa offers a unique food experience through contemporary and sustainable Amazonian cuisine. The restaurant’s name Callampa is the one given to a delicious mushroom that grows on tree bark; here, we serve a three-course meal based on produce harvested from our bio-orchard and the forest. Some are seasonal, such as the umarí and zapote fruits, while other staples are found year-round.

The rainforest’s awakening

We will depart before dawn to see the most important endemic and migratory species that comprise Northern Peru’s bird corridor. Among these, tanagers and toucans that fly among the treetops and feed while the sun slowly breaks through the mist in Cordillera Escalera Mountain Range. There are several spots within and around Bosque Guardian for bird-watching and other animal species.

Discover a hidden natural pool

In the middle of the forest, among gigantic boulders, there’s a calm and secluded source of water from the Alto Ponasillo River. We will descend along a marked trail, immersed in the rainforest, to refresh ourselves in one of the lodge’s two rivers. In case of preferring a closer pool, there’s one in the Tiraco River, with its small rock seats and delicate waterfalls.

Looking for our guardian trees

Reconnect with nature through this hike in the primary forest and meet two great age-old trees: a renaco, part of the ficus genus, and a shapana. Survivors of the deforestation that hit the area, these guardian trees motivate us to continue preserving the rainforest and its varied ecosystems in which we may observe living beings, such as mosses, fungi, and lichens. Along this trail we will come across and learn about the forest’s elements from different perspectives.

Wildlife at night

New sounds start appearing at night: certain frogs and birds stand out within the larger set of biodiversity that frames this experience. We will walk with our flashlights around Bosque Guardian; specifically, bordering a pond where we will find a variety of multicolored, busy, and boisterous amphibians and insects. Nearby, by tree trunks or underground, tarantulas build their dwellings.

El Progreso waterfalls

One of the hot spots near Bosque Guardian is the community of El Progreso, which has implemented a beautiful trail to its waterfalls Within the rainforest, we may visit several cascades at various points of this trail, which create pristine natural pools. Visiting these spaces you will also contribute to the conservation efforts carried out by El Progreso in 720 hectares of Cordillera Escalera Mountain Range.

Salto de la Bruja waterfall

Another great combination of hiking in the rainforest and plentiful natural pools to take a dive at several parts of this trail This delightful challenge requires ascending, by parts, through a slope that shows all of its splendor up to the point that it must be crossed with the help of ropes. After that, you may take a dive in a pristine and perfect natural pool.

Chullachaki waterfalls

A couple of kilometers from Bosque Guardian you may start an impressive trail among rock walls and enthralling waterfalls The various levels of these waterfalls are enjoyed through a trail with stairs, bridges, and stone that border crystal natural pools surrounded by intense foliage. These waterfalls are named “Chullachaki,” as the mythical Amazonian figure that is said to have a single animal foot and another human one.

San Jose’s waterfalls and hot springs

At the outskirts of the nearby town of San Jose, there is a route that goes to hot springs and a couple of waterfalls: Carpishuyacu and Pishurayacu. These are Quechua names: the first means “woodpecker’s water” and the second, “water from vagina,” given the shape of the rocks from which this water emanates. Half-way through the route, you may bathe in hot and replenishing waters, after crossing the Tiraco River on a small raft.

Visiting the paper workshop

Plants are also interesting elements from which you may process special fibers and create papers with unexpected colors and textures Since the creation of Bosques de Papel, this workshop has coalesced people with the territory and its materials. Here, you will have the opportunity to meet master papermakers, recollect the necessary ingredients and go through all the steps for making unique papers.

Cacao and chocolate tour

Cacao, originated in the Peruvian-Ecuadorian Amazon, is a native fruit with fine aroma you may enjoy from the field to the chocolate workshop In Bosque Guardian you will savor different cacao varieties, hand-picked from the trees, to then understand how these are harvested and dried, among other processes. The most delicious part arrives in the workshop, where you will create cacao with artisanal techniques.

Visiting Melipona beehives

Melipona stingless bees, popularly known as “ramichi,” are another singularity found in the Amazon Here, you will interact with these and understand how they are raised to produce such a special type of honey with health benefits and that prevents the growth of harmful microbes and fungi. Moreover, you will learn about their interrelationship with the forest through the pollination tasks they carry-out.

AKONABIH

This is a privileged area to watch hummingbirds and other vibrant species, within the forest or from natural, or constructed, lookout points. A few kilometers away from Bosque Guardian we find Aconabikh, or the acronym (in Spanish) for the Koepcke’s Hermit Association for the Preservation of Birds and Biodiversity, a private area where you may see endemic hermits and golden manakins as you hike to waterfalls.
